Sony has started to ship dual-layer Blu-ray discs at 50 GB, which is the most storage dense optical media today. These are only single-write, BD-R and the rewritable are expected to come later this year according to Sony. Sony has doubled the capcity fromt he previous and barely established single-layer disc at 25 GB. The discs has the capacity to store up to 4 hours of HD quality video at 24 Mbit/s and has the so called AccuCORE technology that brings advantages such at protection against scratches, data corruption and temperatures.
The discs are to be released in the USA and will cost about $50.
