Sony has offered us a glimpse of what screens of the future may be like. The company has developed an 4.1″ OLED only 80 micrometer in profile. The display can be bended back and forth or simply wrapped around around a cylinder, clearly demonstrated by Sony in a video. The ultrathin OLED panel is powered by thin-film transistors (OTFT) using a new organic semiconductor (peri-Xanthenoxanthene) with better properties and transfers electricity eight times more efficient than regular OTFT panels.

By placing the integrated circuit that controls the video signals outside of the display surface you can bend and roll the panel without damaging the monitor. According to Sony the image quality will remain the same even after 1,000 rolls.

The resolution is 432 x 240 pixels and it can show up to 16.8 million colors with 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Sony considers the primary uses to be as electronic paper it will be officially announced at SID 2010 in Seattle.

With its extremely thin profile and flexible properties we can see a ton of interesting uses for Sony’s new technology, and we will be seeing more of these flexible displays the coming years.
