The netbook market is one of the most transparent and has been so since the concept first appeared. Intel’s Atom platform dominates and the functionality is often more or less identical between models. Now that Sony has joined the fight with the VAIO W series it has at least made sure to use less common components. It’s still Intel’s Atom processor, but the N280 model is a bit faster than the more common N270. At the same time it comes with faster WiFi, 802.11n, Bluetooth and LED backlit LCD screen.
The LCD of Sony VAIO W is the trump too. Even though it’s of the classic 10.1″ format Sony has chosen to use high resolution panel. The regular 1024×576 pixel resolution has been replaced by a much more pleasant 1366×768 resolution.
It comes with 1GB DDR2 memory, 160GB harddrive and 3.5h battery time with 3 cell battery. It measures 179mm x 268mm x 32mm and comes in three different colors, berry pink, sugar white and chocolate brown.
Despite the 3 cell battery the price will be ¥60,000 when it launches in Japan in August, which should convert into roughly $650. Sony VAIO W looks like a pretty complete netbook, but then it costs a bit more too.
