It’s less than a week ago since AMD uncovered HD 7970, and several graphics cards are not coming three months to complete the Southern Islands family from AMD. Among these we have everything from HD 7750 to the beast HD 7990.
HD 7970 has already been uncovered and will launch officially on January 8th along with HD 7950. HD 7950 sports 28 GCN units (1 792 Radeon cores) with 900 MHz clock frequency – only 25 MHz lower than HD 7970. HD 7950 will like big brother sport 3 GB of GDDR5 memory, but clocked at only 5000 MHz. Before or during March AMD will release another HD 7950, but with only 1.5 GB memory and a lower price.
Pitcairn that measures 245mm² will be part of the HD 7800 series where HD 7870 and HD 7850 are planned today. HD 7870 and HD 7850 will cost $299 and $219 respectively, where both get 1 GB GDDR5 memory. Pitcairn is slated for February.
When it comes to Cape Verde there is more to tell. Cape Verde is the smallest of the bunch with only 164mm² surface and 14 GCN units (896 Radeon cores), 56 texture units and 16 ROPs. HD 7770 will cost $149, while HD 7750 that is a reduced version will cost less, but both cards should launch in March.
HD 7990 is also slated for March and will become AMD’s most powerful graphics card, code-named New Zeeland. HD 7990 will be based on two Tahiti XT circuits with 2 x 32 GCN units (2 x 2048 Radeon cores), 2 x 128 texture units, 2 x 32 ROPs. According to Fudzilla, the clock frequency will be 850MHz, while the graphics memory will be 2 x 3 GB GDDR5 and operate at 5000 MHz. HD 7990 is expected to get an extreme price tag, at around 849.
Tahiti, Pitcairn and Cape Verde include the entire Southern Islands family sporting AMD’s new GCN architecture, but there should be more models coming in Q2. There will be reduced versions of Tahiti and/or Pitcairn with the suffix LE, which means we might see both HD 7930 and HD 7830.
