Swiss security company Objectif Sécurité says that it managed to break a 14 character Windows XP password in just 5.3 seconds and that the key was Solid State Drives. By optimized the hash tables and look-up functions for the new storage technology it managed to
speed up the process of cracking the password 100 fold.
The harddrive can be quite limiting when looking up hash tables and Objectif Sécurité says that is function is up to 500 times faster than competitor Elcomsoft who made headlines through its work with using GPGPU for cracking and recovering passwords. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s announcement from Elcomsoft though.
