The differences from regular mechanical drives are many and it has become popular to put SSDs through many different kinds of synthetic benchmarks, which is far from an objective overview of how a SSD truly performs in a PC at regular use, which is what really matters in the end.
At Anandtech they have published a walkthrough of the SSD technology where they look closer at how performance is affected after periods of use and how the TRIM command of Windows 7 will remedy this problem.
An interesting test that also offer plenty of real world scenarios that we hope to investigate further in our own coming SSD article.
