We are all excited that Valve has taken it upon itself to port the Steam platform to both Mac OS X and Linux. This is a massive task and even though both have been announced, the actual games aren’t here. And it will take time before they are even close to the PC version.
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not out to be a killjoy. It’s just that many seem to thinking that will finally bring a lot more gamers to both platforms. It won’t for a long time, but it’s coming. The first test of Portal for Mac was … not exactly disappointing, but we want more.
Valve has done an amazing job porting Steam, but before we can safely say it really is a cross-platform gaming solution, Valve needs to live up to its promises. I’m sure it will eventually, but anyone with the slightest porting and game developing experience knows this is a huge task.
I applaud Valve for making this move. It’s simple awesome. I’m just hoping it realized what a huge commitment this is.
