Sun about to launch Niagara – an 8-core processor

Sun Microsystems has been an active party on the processor market for long, but has always geared its products towards companies. Its new processors are also for workstations and servers and the new series are all about multithreading. Sun Niagara is the name of the new processor series and Sun is planning on launching at least two models before the end of the year. The two models will have 8 and 6 cores each which can wokr with 4 threads simultanously. So if you working in parallel there is a lot of power to collect here.

To begin with Niagara will work at 1.0GHz and Sun is expecting that its new system will whip both Opteron and Xeon when it comes to multithreaded applications. Hardly an option for Half-Life 3 though.
