Samsung has been rumored to be working on High definition AMOLED screens for mobile units and we have seen rumors of coming products. It seems Super AMOLED HD screens really do exist and we can expect the first phones this fall. The sizes will be 5 to 6″ and use a form of PenTile Matrix.

Samsung stole our hearts with its Super AMOLED Plus panel with genuine RGB Matrix, each pixel has three subpixels (Red, Green, Blue), that could bring the best of both worlds. A high contrast screent with good blackness and real sharpness.

The difference between the two is that PenTile systems tries to trick the eye through sub-pizels of different sizes. This makes it easier to fit more pixels onto a given surfaces, but lose sharpness since the eye is hard to fool.

It looks like Samsung hasn’t been able to master the new LITI (laser-induced thermal imaging) manufacturing that is the key to extremely high resolution AMOLED panels. Instead it has been forced to use regular Fine-Metal-Mask technology that is used with above mentioned Super AMOLED Plus panel. The shadow mask technology that is used in FMM is not just expensive, it also has limitations.

The problem with this technology is that it is hard to pack AMOLED pixels efficiently and Samsung had a hard time fitting WVGA resolution into its 4.3″ SAP panel. With the coming Super AMOLED HD panels it has been forced to use the less delicate PenTile technology, and what looks like big screens. All to be able to fit 720 x 1280 resolution.

According to sources to PhoneArena Samsung will initially use Super AMOLED HD screens at 5 to 6″ for smartphones, and 7″ for tablets. The first phones will appears this fall and 7″ tablet is expected near the end of the year.

We look forward to High Defintion AMOLED panels on smartphones and these sources gives more credibility to Samsung GT-I9220 being equipped with 5.3″ Super AMOLED HD screen. The question is if Samsung has managed to make PenTile Matrix better in some way, and if users are ready for smartphones at 5″ or more?
