Storage maker TDK has announced the completion of a new 10-layer Blu-ray disc that can store up to 320GB data, in other words 32GB per layer. The disc has, beside the many data layers, also a protective layer to prevent scratches and protect other physical torments the disc may be exposed to. Even though TDK’s monster discs can store many times more data than regular Blu-ray media the technology is backward compatible.

This means that the Blu-ray players and burners available today will be able to play TDK’s new media. It even claims that the discs are so reliable that they are ready for commercial use.

The big problem with a 320GB Blu-ray disc is the cost though, since simpler Blu-ray media are still quite expensive compared to the established DVD technology.

TDK is expected to show its new Blu-ray discs at CEATEC in Japan this weeks, which means we should be hearing more about them shortly.
