TDK has been leading the development of Blu-ray media some time now and about a year ago it presented a 100GB Blu-ray disc that used four layers at 25GB each. Now it seems that TDK has continued to work with multiple layer technologies and even an eight layer disc to reach 200GB. Its 100GB media is already available as a prototype and will according to TDK offer a maximal transfer rate at 216Mbps (6x) which is three times as fast as the first generation Blu-ray media, which TDK has already started shipping. Exactly when 200GB Blu-ray media will arrive is yet to be announced, but it will hardly be within the near future as we are still waiting for the first generation media. Anyhow, it seems there is a lot of potential with Blu-ray, although we don’t even dare to guess what an eight layer Blu-ray disc would cost.
