Tegra 3 will replace Tegra 2 and bring much improved specifications and a circuit area almost twice as big as Tegra 2. Tegra 3 is still said to be just as efficient thanks to advanced power saving functions and the fact that Tegra 3 can do calculations faster than Tegra 2 and enter idle modes faster or simply deactivate the cores not needed.
Tegra 3 is called Kal-El and is expected to become the first retail quad-core circuit based on ARM. We will get 4 ARM Cortex-A9 cores up to 1.5 GHz and a new graphics core that is based on the GeForce 8000 series. The 12 execution units that supports 3D, 2560 x 1600 resolution and twice as much power as Tegra 2.
NVIDIA is hardly alone with a quad-core SoC, but it insists that together with the massively improved performance battery times will be the same as with Tegra 2 and may even be better in some cases thanks to more aggressive power saving functions. Tegra 3 is mainly intended for retail, e.g. tablets, but may also appear in some more exclusive smartphones.
