Texas Instruments has during the 3GSM World Congress displayed a new processor circuit for mobile phone, the first capable of playing 720p high-res video material. The circuit is called OMAP3430 and will also be the first to support application processors supporting the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard, a technology that will make it possible to display advanced 3D graphics with a mobile phone. One might question the use of 720p material on a 2″-3″ mobile phone display, but the idea is to connect the phone to an external display and in that way make it possible to do the high-res format justice.
“With support for up to 720p HD-video playback (1280×720 pixels), the OMAP3430 application processor gives consumers direct access to personal video content stored in high-definition formats. Users can transfer and view HD- video content on the mobile handset or connect the handset to a projector or large screen TV, giving consumers the flexibility to determine how and where they view video programs.”
With support for both high-res video and 3D graphics it’s pretty clear that Texas’ new mobile processor will offer new possibilities for mobile phone users. There is an overall expectancy to see more computer functionality with mobile phones the years to come and there will certainly be more application processors launched in the near future.
