Texas Memory Systems recently announced a flash-based storage solution that whips pretty much all other similar drives. RamSan-620 use NAND flash SLC memory chips, which is the perfect foundation for a truly fast storage solution. RamSan-620 is no regular SSD though, it doesn’t use the SATA or the PCI Express interface like io-Fusion’s unorthodox solutions. Texas Memory Systems has used the only thing that can keep up the pace, Gigabit fiber.
RamSan-620 is rack mounted and the 2U case can house up to 5TB ultrafast flash storage. When we say ultrafast we really mean it as the system has a bandwidth of 3GB/s. This surely makes any retail solutions like the OCZ Z-Drive looks weak and meager.
“The RamSan-620 is a green IT choice, occupying only 2U of rack space and requiring only 325 Watts of power. In order to achieve similar performance, hard disk solutions would require as many as 500 drives, occupy 36 disk enclosures requiring nearly three full racks, consume over 7,000 Watts, and cost upwards of half a million dollars by the time the enclosures and controllers were included.”
Texas Memory Systems hasn’t revealed the price and to be honest we don’t want to know.
