Texas Memory Systems has loads of really fast storage solutions but its latest creation, RamSan, seems to be something really extraordinary. It’s storage solutions is namely based on RAM circuits, or so called Solid State technology without any mechanical parts. This means extremely fast access times, but also potential for considerably higher transfer rates. Texas Memory System has developed its RamSan unit to be used in its InfiniBand network, which is a very fast serial data interface. It namely claims that RamSan is the fastest storage solution in the world and with an access time of about 15 microseconds and a bandwidth at 800MB/s with a single port controller it’s hard to say no.
RamSan will, according to TMS, be able to deliver up to 50,000 I/O operations per second, compare with the 250-300 I/Os a regular consumer harddrive can do. We have no idea what TMS’ RamSan unit costs, but we can guarantee you they aren’t cheap. That RamSan is a product for supercomputers and computer systems with extremely high requirements is perhaps a given.
