Notebooks have become all the more efficient and most manufacturers launch models that have set their sights on a long battery time. Something that was clearly displayed by HP EliteBook 6930p and its 24 hours of battery time. Toshiba has now displayed a new battery that will not only enable longer up-times than today’s lithium-ion cell batteries, but will also charge incredibly fast. Toshiba’s SCiB (Super Charge Ion Batteries) will gain charge up to 90 percent capacity in just 10 minutes.

It will not only charge faster, but SCiB batteries can also be charged more times. The batteries can charge up to 5000-6000 times, more than 10 times as many as the 500 charges regular lithium-ion batteries can handle.

“SCiB batteries were introduced last year, with the first versions designed for industrial applications. The batteries will also find their way into a Cannondale electric bicycle, the Schwinn Tailwind, that will go on sale in the U.S. and Europe next year.”

Toshiba’s SCiB technology certainly sounds like a breath of fresh air for the notebook market. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like the battery technology will become available anytime soon. But there is at least the good news that these batteries are harmless. There have been several reports of exploding lithium-ion batteries, something which SCiB batteries will not.
