AMD will launch its first APUs this Winter. The Brazos platform consists of the processors Zacate and Ontario that si made by TSMC using its 40nm technology. AMD Llano takes the APU program to desktops and it will be made by GlobalFoundries at the 32nm node, but it looks like TSMC is back when it comes to the 28nm node.

According to new rumors AMD and TSMC have signed a deal for the next generation APUs that is expected to launch in 2012 and then using new and fresh 28 nanometer technology. The APUs are called Krishna and Wichita, and will also be made by GlobalFoundries with its 28 nanometer technology.

That AMD once again gives its trust to TSMC is a bit surprising considering all the problems that were with the 40nm node, but at the same time it could be smart to spread the risks over two plants if either would run into problems.

AMD makes no secret of using GF and TSMC in the future

We’re also curious to learn how we will be able to tell which chip was made by which compan, but we’re certain someone will crack the code, and do it fast.
