Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, has announced that it will release Ubuntu 7.10, Kubuntu 7.10 and Edubuntu 7.10 tomorrow, October 18th. The new versions will bring a number of new additions, whereof the choice of directly implementing Compiz Fusion and its composite engine will be met with mixed feelings, especially by people using ATI graphics cards. The screen, graphics and graphics driver handling have been updated to a whole new level, and this includes bulletproof-X which is suppose to kick in when the X server fails to start, and make it easier to save a crashing system.

Printer handling, office and image manipulation applications have all been upgraded along with a long series of general updates to the system.

Over at tech.tolero.org they published a review of the Ubuntu 7.10 Beta back in September, but it summarizes the new features of Gutsy Gibbon quite well.
