Ubuntu is used by almost a third of all Linux users according to a marketing survey done by Desktoplinux.com. In the survey, which was not scientifically performed, over 15 000 Linux users have answered what Linux distribution they’re using. 29.2 percent of the answers said Ubuntu which is, not surprisingly, a victory by a landslide. At second place we find Debian with 12.2 percent of the votes. After that the votes were more evenly distributed and for a better overview we’ve compiled a list of the results.
- 29.2% – Ubuntu
- 12.2% – Debian
- 10.1% – openSUSE (13% incl. SLED)
- 9.6% – Gentoo
- 7% – Fedora
- 4.8% – Mandriva (incl. Mandrake, Lycoris and Connectiva)
- 2.2% -Red Hat
- 1% – Linspire
- 0.8% – Xandros
- remaining spread among smaller distributions
According to DesktopLinux.com you can see a clear pattern among the votes and that is that the community-based Linux distributions are more eager to vote. But there’s no doubt that Ubuntu is the primary choice among Linux users.
