Better late than never, but Valve has now added the new section “Software” to Steam. To begin with there are seven applications, including the popular benchmarks 3DMark 11 and 3DMark Vantage.
Valve founder, Gabe Newell, is not very impressed with Microsoft’s coming app stores Windows Store in Windows 8. Partly about the restrictions and the fact it is a locked platform, but most of all because he thinks Windows 8 is a disaster for PCs. To counter Microsoft’s own Windows Store, Valve has now started selling regular software through Steam, later than first promised since this was due in September.
Valve starts with seven relatively known applications: Artrage Studio Pro, CameraBag 2, Gamemaker: Studio, 3D-Coat, 3DMark Vantage, 3DMark 11 and its own Source Filmmaker. The list is not very long, but Valve promises more apps are coming. Just like games in Steam the installation is simple, updates automatic and you can store your work in the Steam Cloud.
