VIA has launched a new motherboard platform called Pico-ITX and as expected when it comes to VIA it is a new minimalistic platform. Those who were impressed by Mini-ITX and similar standards Pico-ITX is going to blow you away. This motherboard formfactor is namely 75% smaller than Mini-ITX, measuring only 100mm x 72mm. Pico-ITX focuses on power-efficient work and VIA has been working hard on optimizing the power-saving functions. The Pico-ITX motherboard will be paired with VIA’s energy efficient models of the VIA C7 series or the fanless VIA Eden processor. The motherboard is based on the VIA VX700 chipset; a complete solution with an integrated graphics circuit and other multimedia functions.
“Helping to fulfill VIA’s vision to drive the x86 platform more widely and empower more people to enjoy the digital lifestyle, the Pico-ITX mainboard form factor is designed to enable system developers and OEMs to create smaller, lighter, quieter and even more mobile devices than ever before, and open up a new world of possibilities across multiple embedded PC, system and appliance segments.”
Pico-ITX is a really exciting platform and even if the performance is far from ruthless, you can’t deny the potential of a platform just lightly bigger than a playing card.
