Yesterday was the official release date for VIA’s latest motherboard chipset, VIA KT400A. As a sequel to VIA’s not so impressive KT400-chipset, the KT400A actually hasn’t so much new to offer. The northbridge now has official support for DDR400 but also an optimized memory controller. The optimization has been labeled “FastStream64 Technology” and majorly consists of more and deeper buffers for shorter access time. The memory controller is still single channeled, despite various rumors. VIA has also released some information about the new southbridge, VT8237, which will offer some interesting news. First of all, the new southbridge has support for SATA but also a doubled bandwidth between the northbridge and southbridge (V-link, 1.06GB/s). The new southbridge won’t be out until sometime in Q2. Some reviews/previews of VIA KT400A has come up in the last two days, and even though it’s about early reference motherboards, it doesn’t seem to be a “NForce2-killer”.
