3dfx was a real giant many years back with its Voodoo series where they more or less took 3D acceleration to the consumer market. Unfortunately the era ended and the company was acquired by NVIDIA which meant an end to the Voodoo series and a stop for the support for the circuits and cards the company had delivered. But there are few companies which have such dedicated followers as 3dfx and the community around the idolized manufacturer have kept the cards living for many years now through home-made drivers and such. Now a programmer called Ryan ‘Colourless’ Nunn has released a new driver for no less than the original, Voodoo 1, with support for Microsoft’s 64-bit version of Windows XP!
The new driver is a part of Nunn’s 3dfx GlideXP project which has now been renamed 3dfx GlideXP Project for x64. Ryan Nunn has used 3dfx’s driver sources and managed to rewrite the kernel drivers for NT so that you can now use both Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo 2 cards under Windows XP x64. It seems he has succeeded and all Voodoo owners with 64-bit plans can so finally relaxe. Perhaps not the most usable fix but still an impressive achievement to keep 3dfx and the Voodoo series alive.
More information about GlideXP x64 can be found at the official website and at Beyond3D’s forum where Ryan Nunn has decribed his procedures and also offer links to the new drivers.
