WD has, as expected, launched its first storage product based on the new 3.5″ harddrive with 3 TB capacity. The harddrive maker announces that it updates external Essential family and the flagship will be a 3TB model of My Book Essention with USB 3.0 interface.
Western Digitals My Book Essential is an external harddrive for the desktop and holds a single 3.5″ drive. With its new harddrive technology WD can reach record storage capacity in this limited formfactor. Something only Seagate has done before.
The harddrive inside the casing is a WD Caviar Green with 5400 RPM engine, which should be enough storage for most people and at at the same keep temepratures and power down.
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desktop is already listed at less than $200, but the price of WD’s new 3TB My Book Essential is yet to be decided. Competition couldn’t hurt though.
As previously revealed WD is also expected to launch internal 3.5″ drives with 3TB capacity shortly, in October even according to rumors.
