Harddrive maker Western Digital has been praised for its set-top media players and especially its latest TV HD model. When got a chance at squeezing it a bit we were quite pleased with it, but the performance was perhaps not the best. It was still fast enough to render 1080p signals, but menus and browsing images was fairly slow. It looks like WD has listened and revealed that it will update the player.
WD TV HD will not just become faster but also get support for PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) and more file formats. We have no detailed information on the hardware upgrades of WD’s media player but it had the following to say about the new PTP support.
Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) lets you view or backup photos and video directly from your digital camera, camcorder or USB drive. Use the on-screen menus to copy, move or delete files.
WD will continue to release new firmwares for its media players adding support for more wireless USB adapters, new functions and more.
The new and faster unit will start selling in the UK with the model number “WDBABF0000NBK-NESN”.
