Western Digital is so far holds the sole reign of the harddrive retail market with its 3.5″ 2TB harddrive. Western Digital launched the first 2TB as a part of its Green Power series, which means that it not only sports tremendous capacity but also power saving features. Multiple site shave now posted reviews of the most spacious drive we have and the results are unanimous, with four 500GB platters Western Digital’s 2TB monster can do almost anything, but it also does it efficiently.
Western Digital Green Power 2TB consumes at most 10W during load and when idle it spins down to only 6W. For example, Seagate’s 1TB 7200.11 harddrive consumes 12W and 8W respectively.
Western Digital’s Green Power series uses variable rotational speeds to reduce power consumption and even if this does have a negative impact on performance, WD’s 2TB harddrive still delivers respectable performance, more than enough for any file server you might have standing in a corner or closet.
“While the performance is nowhere near Raptor territory, the sequential transfer rates are admirable given the near 50% drop in spindle speed. An added bonus is the almost eerie silence of the 2TB model. Our drive received many double takes during seek testing, as we truly believed we were benching the wrong device. With huge storage and cool / quiet operation, I see this drive going into many DVR’s and media center PC’s in the near future.” – PC Perspective
The first 2TB harddrive has very few drawbacks, neglecting the price which is considerably higher than the 1.5TB models we also have available in stores.
