WiDRIVE is made by the fresh company EDS Lab and is simply a wireless external harddrive. WiDRIVE can house both 1.8″ and 2.5″ hardrives and use the 802.11b/g WiFi standard to handle the wireless functions. EDS Lab claims that WiDRIVE is the only portable wireless harddrive on the market and a battery that can power the unit for up to two hours makes the unit completely cordless, at least for some time. When the unit was displayed at CeBIT there were a lot of disruptions with the data transfers, which can of course be explained by the hugh amount of WiFI nets available there. WiDRIVE is expected to arrive in Europe in July at $95. But then you also need to purchase a suitable harddrive.
The question is if it’s perhaps better to wait for the Wireless USB standard that should arrive later this year. Anyhow, we are glad to see more and more wireless units for our computers, cables are basically evil and we all know it.
