WiMAX is a wireless data transfering technology which among others the chip giant Intel is pushing for. WiMAX is suppose to be used both as a technology over entire cities through its long range but also an alternativ to today’s WLAN. Now analysts are saying a new technology is on the way that will compete with WiMAX about being the future standard for wireless LAN. The technology is called 802.20 and has now been revived since Qualcomm has taken over the company, Flarion Technologies, that developed the technology. Intel and its partners has however started to gain a pretty wide support for its sin WiMAX 802.16e technology that offers both considerably higher speeds and wider range. What format that will become the care baby of the consumers remains to see, but at least we are getting closer and closer to a wireless community. Source: ElectronicsWeekly
