The launch of Windows 7 has been a tremendous success. Reviews have been generous with positive adjectives and the overall user response have been positive. So, it comes as no surprise that the launch has been a commercial success. NetApplications made a survey just two weeks after the launch and found that Windows 7 has taken a market share of 4% among Internet connect computers.

Four percent may not sound that impressive, but it took Windows Vista seven months, or more than 30 weeks, to reach the same market share as Windows 7 did in two weeks, thus 15 times faster. Already by the end of October, when Windows 7 had only been available for 8 days, the market share was up to 2.15 %, which has to be considered impressive.

Windows XP is still the dinosaur of the market, with 70.48 % market share. From there it’s a big leap down to Windows Vista, Mac OS, etc.

The numbers may look a bit off, but do remember that it gathers information from thousands websites around the globe and calculate the average user data. Thus the numbers may be off in smaller groups, like the readers here where Windows 7, Mac OS X and Linux have a much larger share, while older operating systems only have a small share.
