Windows 7 optimizations for HyperThreading

Windows 7 isn’t just a big gain for wimpy netbooks but also fir more powerful systems. Especially Intel’s new Nehalem architecture with Core i7 leading it will appreciate Microsoft’s new operating system. Even if Microsoft already has come a long way in the development of Windows 7 there are still problems to solve and optimizations to be done. Something that has been put up high on the list of priorities is how to best take advantage of Intel’s HyperThreading technology.

HyperThreading was introduced in Intel’s processors with the NetBurst architecture and Pentium 4 family. When Intel launched Core and Core 2 it had removed the HT support.

The technology that simulates extra processor cores in the operating system makes it possible to execute twice as many threads, in theory, and with Nehalem HyperThreading resurrected.

Windows 7 will offer improved HyperThreading support over previous operating system, which should also result in a boost for the previously mentioned netbooks. Intel’s Atom processor also sports HT for better performance.

How far Microsoft has come with its HT optimizations in Windows 7 RC is uncertain.
