Microsoft VP Steve Ballmer has confirmed what we already know, that Windows 8 will be ready next year not only optimized for PCs but also tablets and other formfactors. The operating system builds on the success of Windows 7, but is expected to present a different user environment on e.g. tablets than PCs.

It was during a press conference in Tokyo that Steve Ballmer addressed Microsoft’s work on the next generation of Windows. After 350 million sold copies of Windows 7 it has some big expectations to live up to . Everything has pointed to a launch next year, something Steve Ballmer has confirmed in the same breath as he praised the current operation system Windows 7.

“And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.”

As previous rumors have indicated we will most likely see many versions of Windows 8 for both x86 and ARM, which is also a new venture for Microsoft and will require extra resources at the company.

If Windows 8 and the work with ARM and mobile platforms can help Microsoft turn its negative trend remains to be seen, but now that it is addressing the coming operating system in public it feels like it is heading in the right direction again.
