Windows Visa Beta2 was released for download last week, and for those who feel like it you can download the beta yourself, directly from the maker! Apparantly it was more than a handful of users that wanted to try on the new operating system from Microsoft, as Microsoft calls it the greatest event in the all the Internet’s download history. Microsoft say’s that that despite the bandwidth supplied it isn’t enough to handle all the downloads, and if more bandwidth would be supplied it might acctually crash the Internet, or render it unstable for a while.
“We are pumping out bits as fast as we can. If we pushed out bits any faster there would be a measureable impact for the Internet. So, we are literally saying that if we increased our bandwidth any further there’s a possibilty of taking down the Internet – people might have problems with World Cup viewing, etc. That would be bad. So, it isn’t that we weren’t anticipating demand – we were and are – it is that we are at the threshold of what the Internet can bear.”
In a column at Longhorn Blogs one could read that Microsoft acctually had the bittorrent technology in mind to distribute the software. But the technology’s close connection to wares made it impossible. Which is kind of pity, since the technology is very efficient and makes the spreading a lot easier.
