Windows Vista will as we have reported earlier have a thurough support for the next generation optical format HD DVD. Something you could be very glad for it weren’t for the fact that everyone except Microsoft likes the competing format, Blu-ray, better. However you should be able to expect that the older DVD format will work without a flaw, alas no. Vista will not work with the older players since many of these lack what many claim to be the dumbest invention in mankind’s history: region coding. Microsoft also claims that since the life expectancy of these drives are about 3 years so there is no reason really to support them. Source: blogs.msdn.com
