WinFS is a file system we’ve been longing for and it was first ment to be a part of Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows Vista. These plans has been changed though as WinFS wouldn’t be done in time for the launch of Windows Vista and will be lunched a few months after Vista. Some were afraid Microsoft would put WinFS aside for now but it seems there is still a lot of going on with WinFS. During PDC 2005 WinFS has been displayed for the visitors and they also handed out copies of the Beta 1-version of the filesystem. Many wonders if WinFS is a filesystem or just an addon for NTFS. The reply made by the head man behind the developemnt of WinFS, Shishir Mehrotra, is as simple as it is boring. “It’s both. It’s built on NTFS and it is a file system.” WinFS seems to be making progress and hopefully Microsoft will be able to keep its deadline with a launch right after Windows Vista tagit has arrived.
