The Wireless USB Promoter Group, comprised of companies HP, Intel, LSI, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors, and Samsung, is currently working on updating the Wireless USB specification to version 1.1. The improvements of the specification include better power efficiency, support for UWB (Ultra-wideband) frequencies over 6 GHz and more options for first-time association of devices. This will include NFC (Near Field Communication) which is a contactless connections between devices, most frequently used by mobile phones, but will now also become much more common with computers. Wireless USB is still rather uncommon and has had a hard time competing with Bluetooth, but should hopefully pick up in the future.
