The new X38 chipset from Intel has impressed us very much so far, it has proven to bring both good performance and overclocking potential, something you rarely see. In fact, we expect X38 will make it possible to run heavy 3D benchmarks at +5.5 GHz [quad-core] speeds. But as we told you a few weeks ago, Intel has yet another chipset coming, the X48. While the X38 is indeed a high-end chipset, the X48 will trump the X38 with native support for 1,600 MHz FSB and 1,600 MHz DDR3 clocks. The rest of the X48 chipset remains a bit illusive, but by the looks of it, it won’t be much different from X38.
It seems that more people have received this information, and while we still believe that X48 will be in our hands before the end of the year, with samples being sent out to partners soon, it seems that other sources claims it to be delayed to Q1, 2008. Some even claim that the X48 may never come if the X38 doesn’t attract enough customers.
But if we look at it like this, Intel is planning to launch a chipset with native support for 1,600 MHz FSB, but will they also launch something fun (perhaps a QX6950 with 1,600 FSB) for us to pair the X48 with?
