x86 is the base architecture for all PC processors today and the foundation for this architecture was created over 20 years ago. In other terms x86 has been around for almost an eternity in the computer world. At HardwareHell they’ve published an article about the x86 architecture, when it was introduced and what big change it has gone through over the years. They’ve taken a look at the alternative architectures such as IBM’s PowerPC and STI’s Cell. They ask themselves whether x86 will be around forever or when/if we should perhaps move on to a new base for the PC market. Interesting reading for those who wants to know more about the foundation for the moden PC processor.
