Most after-market processor cooler use some form of tower design. By putting the fan on the side of the cooler the cooler can be reduced in mass and improve the overall air flow. This design isn’t the best for all purposes though, since these often need more room than slim cases offers. Durin D982 is a new cooler from Xigmatek that goes against the flow and use a low-profile design that also works with smaller systems.

The cooler uses heatpipes for maximal capacity where two 8mm heatpipes are in direct contact with the processor for best possible heat transfer.

Durin D982 supports Intel’s LGA775/1156 and 1366 sockets and is attached using the bundled backplate and screws. The heatsink is just 65mm high and with the bundled temperature controlled PWM fan it measures only 85mm. The 92mm  fan operates at different speeds depending on temperature, but will never go above 22dBA noise.

Xigmatek’s aluminum cooler weighs 200g and looks like an interesting choice for HTPCs and other tight systems. Price pending.
