Some things to read during the weekend

Xbit labs present us with two nice articles to read during the weekend:

  • The first one deals with manufacturing techniques used in current processors. You can read it here.
  • A second article is about evolutions in Display technology. This article is to be found here. I could recommend to read this column from Dan’s Data as well. (and the comments, which you can find here.)

ModAsylum.com brings a guide on remote controlling your pc; they discuss different remotes available, different receivers, the programs that you could use, how to make your own receiver and how to configure Girder. It’s a nice read. Especially for those who have an old remote lying somewhere…

Hexus.net brings us a review of Shuttles newest SFF: the SB61G2 XPC. Based on Intel’s i865G, it brings Dual channel DDR to Shuttle’s Intel platform.

“The SB61G2 is Shuttle’s vision of a truly high-performance small-form-factor PC. By borrowing heavily from the new Springdale chipset, the SB61G2 is able to amalgamate some of the more desirable features into the cute little package. The most notable of these, in our opinion, is the inclusion of direct S-ATA support stemming from the ICH5 SouthBridge. The lack of space in the SB61G2 is almost perfect for the thin, slinky S-ATA cables.

Tom’s hardware has more nForce2 ULTRA 400 news, in the form of a comparison between 5 boards.

“The differences in measured speed vary depending on the particular benchmark and, occasionally, can assume quite considerable proportions. In view of this observation we can only identify one particular group of users to whom we would recommend the nForce2 Ultra 400: those users seeking maximum performance have our blessing to go for it. “

Less positive news about NVIDIA comes from Futuremark, makers of 3dMark 2003. NVIDIA cheated by optimalising their driver for this benchmarks suite. The latest patch makes this impossibile. You can read more about this here.

Something else I cannot refuse to show you is this; apparently somebody thought Lian-Li’s fishes were not vivid enough… So he made an ant nest in his case. See it yourself here. (Suggestion: Who’s going to house reptiles on his/her Geforce FX 5800 ULTRA? Those animals like hot rocks to rest on 😀 )

I guess that’s enough reading for this weekend…
