AMD seems to have decided where to build its next semiconductor plant, the final choice was New York and Luther Forest Technology Campus. Earlier this month we reported about how the state had been luring AMD with a package worth $1 billion if it decided to build its new plant in New York and apparently AMD accepted the offer. According to TG Daily the construction of the new plant will start somewhere between July 2007 and July 2009 and be ready somewhere between 2012 and 2014. The new plant will offers one of the world’s largest manufacturing capacities of microprocessors and will sport a space of 1.2 million square meters. 21% more space than Intel’s currently largest plant Fab D1D, but about the same as the plant Intel is building in Kiryat Gat, Israel.
AMD’s new plant is expected to cost $3.2 billion including both building costs and equipment. When the plant is completed, in 6-8 years, it is expected to create about 1200 new jobs in New York State. Intel opened up its new plant in Ireland recently and is currently working on a 45nm plant in Israel, so both AMD and Intel seems to be prepared for the future.
