AMD/ATI’s linux drivers is a constantly running debate and even if the updates the have been released recently have been relatively small, version 8.35.5 introduces something new and very interesting. A bit unexpected AMD’s has included the new Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition and this will replace the old firegl control panel completely. A fundamental difference between the two is that the latter is open source, which CCC is not. At the same time AMD has updated the installation scripts for SuSE, Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora, which includes an overall better support for newer kernels with older distributions.
A big difference between the Linux Edition and the Windows edition, which for once is in favor of Linux (this doesn’t happen that often with drivers), is that CCC Linux Edition is a lot faster. The number of functions are pretty few so far, but it’s nice to see that AMD/ATI has finally been able to transfer CCC to Linux.
