AMD is closing in on the launch of its Barcelona architecture and even if this is a very important launch, there is more waiting after that. AMD was talking about the time after Barcelona a while back and the talk has now resurfaced. AMD is mainly focusing on three things; 45nm, Socket AM3 and DDR3. The first K10 processors will be based on 65nm technology, but during the second half of 2008 AMD will start the transition to the more efficient 45nm technology. Whereas, Intel will use regular CMOS technology, AMD will use a 45nm process based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI).

Deneb is the code-named of AMD’s first 45nm processor and by the looks of it, the big difference between it and Agena is that Deneb will supports Socket AM3 and DDR3.

AMD has been quite busy and will remain so even after the launch of K10/Barcelona. This is more or less a necessity if AMD wants to keep up with Intel, which is riding a big wave of success at the moment. More information about AMD’s plans for the future and new circuits can be found at DailyTech.
