AMD took its time to move on to the 65nm technology, that’s at least what it feels like when you also have Intel and its quick work with 65nm and the now approaching 45nm processors. AMD’s first 45nm processor is expected to be known as Shanghai and according to AMD this architecture will get new power-saving functions and even better performance than the Barcelona architecture. Intel’s first 45nm processor, Penryn, is expected to appear during the first quarter of 2008, but by the looks of it AMD may counter with Shanghai already the same year.
The launch will not happen until the end of 2008 and a lot is depending on the cooperation with IBM which is hoping to develop an efficient 45nm manufacturing process together with AMD. That Intel is ahead with its manufacturing processes is hardly a surprise but we’re eager to see if AMD will be able to close the gap in the future.
