ASUS introduce i875 motherboards with SMP support

0

If we are to believe the well-known motherboard manufacturer ASUS, the i875P chipset (Canterwood) supports SMP. In other words this means that the chipset will be able to handle dual CPU and in this case Pentium 4 Xeon with 533 Mhz FSB.
In the near future ASUS will release a new motherboard with support for a maximum of two 3.06 Ghz Xeon CPUs. According to ASUS’ homepage the board will be named “ASUS PC-DL”, though it doesn’t seem to be a server based motherboard, as it doesn’t come equipped with 64-bit PCI-slots.
According the board’s specifications it use the 82875P MCH-chip (northbridge), which is the exact same as in the regular i875P-motherboard. This should in other words mean that the i875P-chipset has got SMP support from the start, which is a fact that Intel never mentioned.
This can turn out to be a very economical solution for those interested in Intel’s dual-CPU systems as the 875P-chipset is far cheaper than the corresponding SMP-chipsets.

You can read more about the motherboard at X-bit labs.com and also at ASUS’ homepage.
