AMD has yet to release their 64 bit processors on the desktop market, and the company has spoken of September as the date of importance. The processor that’ll be released by then is Athlon 64 3200+. This model utilizes 754 pins and has a single-channel DDR controller in its core, which differs from the Opteron’s integrated dual-channel DDR controller.
Simultaniously, AMD will introduce Athlon 64 FX, which uses a whopping 940 pin interface and has, in accordance to the Opteron, a dual-channel DDR controller.
Athlon 64 FX will not make use AMD’s PR rating, but will presumably instead use a new system, which we unfortunately do not have any information about up to this point.
By the end of the first quarter of 2004, we’ll see the successor to Athlon 64 FX, which shares the name, although it also bears “San Diego” as its development name. San Diego will use a 939 pin interface and is manufactured with 90nm technology for higher clockfrequencies.
The prices of the new processors of this year is still a tad indistinct, however they’ll probably be relatively high, especially for the Athlon 64 FX model.
