AMD has, as expected, launched a new model of its Athlon X2 series and to try and grab some attention it has spent a lot of money on marketing the new processor. As we told you a week or so ago, the latest creation by AMD is called Athlon X2 6400+ Black Edition. The new processor is a dual core processor and has a clock frequency of 3.2GHz, a 2GHz HyperTransport bus and 2MB L2 cache. Despite the high clock frequency, the processor is based on AMD’s well-tested 90nm SOI core, which has also resulted in a TDP of 125W. We consider this a competitor to Intel’s Core 2 Duo E6850 and the processor that will have to carry the burden of being the desktop flagship until the Phenom series arrives. The price puts it slightly above $200 in stores.
