It’s now been made official that BitTorrent has purchased the very popular torrent client µTorrent and this is considered a big step in BitTorrent’s move toward legitimate filesharing. BitTorrent has namely teamed up with movie studio Warner Bros where BitTorrent will simply distribute WB’s movies over the Internet. It has namely made a similar deal with movie distributor Image Entertainment. Exactly what that will happen with µTorrent after the purchase is uncertain but as it is one of the most popular clients there will most likely be some really wild discussions if the software is changed all to drastically. According to Bram Cohen and Ludvig Strigeus which are the two behind the client there will not be any major changes anytime soon.

“What does this mean for the µTorrent community? Not much, at least not at first. The intention is to maintain the website as it is, and keep the forums and community active. Moving forward behind the scenes, we will continue to develop µTorrent and will be using the codebase in other applications, especially ones where a fast, lightweight implementation is more suitable, such as embedded systems on TVs, cell phones, and other non-PC platforms.”

We’re eager to see how BitTorrent will use µTorrent as it already has its own official torrent client, but maybe it has something to do with the company’s focus on legitimate film distribution over the Internet. More information can be found in BitTorrent’s press release.
