Beyond3D are following up on their Radeon 9800 Pro preview. There’s been a lot of discussion wether the F-buffern will prove usefull for actual games or if it’s only suited for rendering more complex off line scenes.
Reverend from B3D got a hold of Tim Sweeney from Epic Games and simply asked him: “is the F-buffer any good?” Tim Sweeney is the head honcho behind the Unreal-series and it seems as if he’s pretty happy about the “new” technology.
“There is great value in fully solving the multipass problem. It will mean that any conceivable pixel shaders we write in the future will work backwards-compatibly on past hardware capable of full multipass temporaries spill[…]”
B3D has asked a few other developers the same question so this is probably not the last opinion we get on the technology in ATis latest products.
