Intel seems to be planning a new Extreme Edition processor using the Kentsfield core that will be launched during the third quarter of 2007. Core 2 Extreme QX6800 has namely appeared on Intel’s roadmaps and will be a halt before the 45nm Yorkfield core arrives. As the name implies QX6800 has a clock frequency at 2.93GHz, just like it dual-core sibling X6800, 2 x 4MB L2 cache and a processor bus at 1066MHz. In other words nothing that really it stand out from today’s models and to be honest it feels like there will be rather few spending more money on a Kentsfield-based processor when there’s just a few months left to the arrival of Yorkfield.
This will bring an even more interesting price cut though, Core 2 Quad Q6600 will be become a lot cheaper, moving from 530 USD to 266 USD. Not bad for a quad-core running at 2.4GHz. More information about Intel’s new roadmaps can be found at HKEPC.
