Intel Penryn is the 45nm architecture which the new dual-core Wolfdale and quad-core Yorkfield processors are based upon. It’s sports several enhancements over the current 65nm architecture, not just smaller lanes. We are still waiting for an official launch date for the Penryn-based processors, but over at HKEPC they’ve already published a performance preview of a Wolfdale 2.33GHz processor. They’ve compared it to an equivalent processor of today, Core 2 Duo E6550, and the results are rather astonishing. If we focus on the game benchmarks the performance is from 10 up to 30%(!) better than the current generation, while consuming very little power in comparison.
Unfortunately the article is in Chinese but tables and numbers are still the same and quite easy to understand.
